Cursor and Claude Code are the two AI coding tools developers compare most in 2026, and the choice got harder this autumn. Cursor moved new customers to a different set of plans built around its own and Grok models. Claude Code spread from the terminal to the desktop, the web, Slack and your phone. This guide compares them on how you work, which models you get, what they cost, and which suits which developer.

**Sources.** Facts come from [Cursor's pricing page](https://cursor.com/pricing) and docs, and from Anthropic's [Claude pricing](https://claude.com/pricing) and [Claude Code docs](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/overview), checked on October 26, 2026. Both products change monthly, so confirm prices before you buy.

## The short answer

- **Choose Cursor** if you want an AI-first *code editor*: tab completion, inline edits and an agent panel inside a VS Code-style IDE, and you are happy with Cursor's own Composer models and Grok, or you are on a legacy Cursor plan that still includes other models.
- **Choose Claude Code** if you want a strong *autonomous agent* on Claude models that works in any editor, in the terminal, in CI and from your phone, with model usage included in a flat Claude subscription.
- **Use both** if you like Cursor's editor. Claude Code's VS Code extension installs in Cursor, and many developers run the Claude Code agent inside the Cursor editor.

## Cursor vs Claude Code at a glance

| | Cursor | Claude Code |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **What it is** | AI code editor (desktop IDE) plus a CLI and cloud agents | AI coding agent: terminal CLI, IDE extensions, desktop, web, Slack, mobile |
| **Core strength** | Editing experience: Tab completion, inline edits, agent panel | Autonomous multi-step work across a codebase |
| **Models** | New plans: Cursor's Composer models and Grok included; Claude and GPT billed at API list price from prepaid credit | Claude only: Opus 5.5 by default, plus Sonnet, Haiku and, on higher plans, Fable |
| **Entry price** | Free tier; paid from $8/mo (Plus, Grok only) or $30/mo (Premium) | No Claude Code on Free; from $20/mo (Claude Pro) |
| **Usage model** | One weekly usage pool, then prepaid top-ups | 5-hour session limit plus a weekly limit, with optional usage credits |
| **Works in other editors** | No, it is the editor | Yes: VS Code, Cursor, JetBrains, or none |
| **CI and automation** | Cloud agents and automations on Premium and up | GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, code review, Slack, scheduled cloud tasks |

## Workflow: an editor vs an agent

**Cursor** is built around the editor. You are still the one typing. Tab predicts your next edit, Cmd-K rewrites a selection, and the agent panel takes on larger tasks while you watch the diff appear in files you have open. It suits developers who want to stay in control line by line and like the feel of an IDE that anticipates them.

**Claude Code** is built around delegation. You give it a task ("add rate limiting to the API and write tests"), and it reads the codebase, plans, edits files, runs commands and tests, and reports back. It runs in a terminal, but also as a VS Code or JetBrains extension, a desktop app, on the web at claude.ai/code, from Slack (mention it and get a pull request back) and from the Claude mobile apps. It suits developers who prefer reviewing finished work to steering every keystroke, and teams that want the same agent in CI.

## Models: the biggest change in 2026

Cursor's new plans, which it sells as part of "The X Subscription" after its parent company was reported in August 2026 to have been acquired by SpaceXAI, include usage of Cursor's own **Composer** models and **Grok**. Claude and GPT models are no longer part of the included allowance on the new tiers. On Premium and above you can still use them, billed at the provider's API list price from prepaid credit. Existing customers can stay on the legacy plans (Pro $20, Pro+ $60, Ultra $200), which still include a pool for other models. Cursor's docs say switching is optional and permanent.

Claude Code runs only Anthropic's models, and they are included in your Claude plan: Opus 5.5 by default, with Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5, plus Fable 5.1 on Max, Team Premium and Enterprise. If Claude is the model you want to code with, Claude Code is now the more direct and usually cheaper way to get it. If you prefer Grok or Cursor's fast Composer models, Cursor is the natural home.

## Pricing compared

| Tier | Cursor (new plans) | Claude (includes Claude Code) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Free | Limited usage | Claude Free has no Claude Code |
| Entry | Plus $8/mo: Grok models, no cloud agents | Pro $20/mo ($17/mo billed yearly) |
| Main paid | Premium $30/mo: 4x Plus usage, cloud agents, Bugbot review | Max from $100/mo: 5x or 20x Pro usage per session |
| Heavy use | Super $100/mo (15x), Ultra $200/mo (50x) | Max 20x, or pay-as-you-go through the API |
| Teams | $30 / $100 / $200 per seat, pooled usage | Team Standard $25/seat/mo ($20 yearly), Premium $125 ($100 yearly) |

## Which is better for…

- **Beginners learning to code:** Cursor. Seeing suggestions inline as you type teaches faster than reviewing finished diffs.
- **Large refactors and multi-file features:** Claude Code. Long autonomous runs with tests in the loop are its home turf.
- **Teams on CI and pull requests:** Claude Code, for GitHub Actions, code review and Slack-to-PR. Cursor's cloud agents and Bugbot cover similar ground on Premium and up.
- **Lowest cost:** Cursor Plus at $8 if Grok is enough for you. Otherwise Claude Pro at $20 is the cheapest way to code with a frontier Claude model.
- **Non-developers who want a finished app:** neither. Both assume you can read and run code. A prompt-to-app builder that handles the database, hosting and app-store builds is a better fit.

## Where Vibely fits

Cursor and Claude Code make developers faster at writing code. [Vibely](https://vibely.sh) builds and hosts the whole app (React web app, native iOS and Android, Supabase database, publishing) from a prompt. They also work together: the [Vibely MCP server](https://vibely.sh/features/mcp) lets you build, edit and publish Vibely apps from inside Cursor or Claude Code, so you can describe an app in your editor and get a live URL back. See [build a Vibely app from Cursor](https://vibely.sh/guides/build-a-vibely-app-from-cursor) and [from Claude Code](https://vibely.sh/guides/build-a-vibely-app-from-claude-code-and-codex).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I use Claude Code inside Cursor?

Yes. Claude Code's VS Code extension installs in Cursor, so you can keep Cursor's editor and use Claude Code as the agent, billed to your Claude plan rather than Cursor's credit.

### Is Claude Code better than Cursor?

For autonomous, multi-step coding on Claude models, usually yes. For in-editor autocomplete and inline edits, Cursor is stronger. They are different kinds of tool, which is why many developers use both.

### Does Cursor still include Claude models?

On legacy plans, yes, through the "other models" pool. On the new plans, Claude and GPT are billed at API list price from prepaid credit on Premium and above, and are not part of the included usage.

### Is Claude Code free?

No. Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) or API pay-as-you-go billing.

## The bottom line

Pick **Cursor** for the best AI *editor*, especially if you are fine with Composer and Grok models. Pick **Claude Code** for the best AI *agent* on Claude models, in whatever editor you like. And if the goal is a shipped app rather than faster typing, [start on Vibely](https://vibely.sh) and drive it from either one.
