Claude Code pricing in 2026: every plan, the usage limits, and API costs

Claude Code pricing for 2026: which Claude plans include it, how the 5-hour and weekly limits work, real API costs per developer, and the cheapest plan.

A terminal window with four rising plan bars — Claude Code pricing tiers in 2026

"Claude code pricing" is searched around 27,000 times a month in the US, because the answer is not one number. Claude Code comes with several Claude subscriptions, each with its own usage limits, or it can be billed per token through the API. This guide lays out every option as of October 2026 and helps you pick the cheapest one for how you work.

Sources. Anthropic's Claude pricing and Max pages, the Claude Code cost docs and the API pricing page, checked on October 26, 2026.

Is Claude Code free?

No. Claude's Free plan does not include Claude Code. You need a paid subscription (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) or an API account billed per token.

Claude Code subscription plans

Anthropic's Max page lists the plan "from $100" with a choice of 5x or 20x usage. The 20x tier is widely reported at $200 a month, but that figure comes from third-party sites, not Anthropic's page, so check it at checkout.

How the usage limits work

  • 5-hour session limit. On Pro and Max, usage is measured in rolling five-hour windows. Reach the limit and you wait for the window to reset.
  • Weekly limit. There is also a weekly cap, and Max has a separate weekly allowance for Fable.
  • Shared with chat. The limits cover Claude and Claude Code together. A long chat session uses the same allowance as coding.
  • Usage credits. Past the limit you can switch on pay-as-you-go usage credits with a spend cap (the /usage-credits command) instead of waiting.

Team and Enterprise seats use the same two windows (rolling five-hour and weekly), shared with chat and Cowork.

Claude Code with API pay-as-you-go

You can also sign Claude Code in to a Claude Console (API) account and pay per token. Current list prices per million tokens:

ModelInputOutputCache read
Opus 5.5 (Claude Code default)$4$20$0.20
Sonnet 5.5$2$10$0.10
Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100K tokens)$0.10$0.50—
Fable 5.1$10$50—

Anthropic's own figure from enterprise deployments: Claude Code averages about $13 per developer per active day, or $150–250 per developer per month, and stays under $30 per active day for 90% of users. Prompt caching is a big part of keeping it there, because Claude Code re-reads a lot of the same context.

Which plan is cheapest for you?

  • A few sessions a week: Pro at $20. It is the cheapest way in, and you will rarely hit the weekly cap.
  • Coding with it most of the day: Max. At Anthropic's average API cost of $150–250 a month per active developer, a flat Max plan usually costs less than pay-as-you-go and removes the meter.
  • Occasional or bursty use: the API. You pay only for the days you use it. Set a spend limit in the Console.
  • Teams: Team Standard for most developers, with Premium seats for the heaviest users. Enterprise if you need usage-based billing across 20 or more seats.

How to lower your Claude Code bill

  1. Use the right model. The opusplan setting plans with Opus and executes with Sonnet. Haiku is enough for simple edits.
  2. Clear context between tasks so each new task does not pay to re-read the last one.
  3. Keep a project CLAUDE.md with the commands and conventions the agent would otherwise rediscover every session.
  4. Batch related changes into one well-specified task instead of many small ones.
  5. Cap usage credits so going over the limit never surprises you.

What you get for the money

Every paid plan gets Claude Code everywhere it runs: the terminal CLI (native installer, Homebrew, WinGet or npm, with native Windows support), the VS Code and JetBrains extensions, the desktop app for macOS and Windows (Linux in beta), Claude Code on the web and in the Claude mobile apps, plus Slack, GitHub Actions and GitLab CI integrations. Claude Code vs an AI app builder

Claude Code charges for an agent that writes code in your environment. You still run the database, hosting, app-store builds and deployment yourself. An AI app builder like Vibely charges credits per request and includes the rest: a Supabase database, hosting on a vibelyagent.com subdomain, security scans, and native iOS and Android builds. They combine well. With the Vibely MCP server you can drive Vibely from Claude Code, using Claude to describe and review while Vibely builds and hosts (setup guide).

Frequently asked questions

How much does Claude Code cost per month?

From $20 a month with Claude Pro ($17 billed yearly). Max starts at $100. Teams pay $25 a seat ($20 yearly) or $125 for Premium seats. Through the API, Anthropic reports an average of $150–250 per developer per month.

What is the difference between Claude Pro and Max for Claude Code?

Max gives 5x or 20x Pro's usage per five-hour session, access to Fable, and monthly API credits. Pro is enough for part-time use, and Max is for people who code with Claude Code most of the day.

Is the API cheaper than a subscription?

For light or occasional use, yes. For daily heavy use, usually not: a $100 Max plan typically costs less than the $150–250 a month an active developer spends through the API.

Does Claude Code use the same limits as the Claude app?

Yes. On Pro and Max, chat and Claude Code share the same five-hour and weekly limits.

The bottom line

Start on Claude Pro at $20. Move to Max when you regularly hit the five-hour limit, and use the API only if your usage is occasional or you need per-token billing for a team. If what you want is a deployed app rather than code on your machine, try Vibely free, or connect it to Claude Code and get both.
